Kid A is now eight. WTF, did I just write that? My little girl, my sweet little girl is now eight years old. The same little girl that used to adore Dora the Explorer but now despises her. The girl who used to go to sleep listening to Paul Kelly, Hunters & Collectors & Stevie Wonder because she didn't know LMFAO existed. The same girl that would make me hold her hand from school drop off until the first bell rang in the morning. Not now, these days I'm lucky if she lets me kiss her goodbye, out the car window, in front of the school gate. So yes, she's only eight but she's growing up so quickly.

The alarm went off at 5am and we both groaned as we had been trying to delude ourselves that we would be able to go back to sleep after waking at about an hour earlier. It was cold, raining and it was baby day.

One of the many challenges we face as parents is our kids' birthdays. We want to do what we can to make the birthday memorable and special - but how can we do this every year for each child? We have to contend with sibling jealousy, decide how grand the birthday celebrations need to be, make tough decisions on who not to invite to a gathering, decide whether you cater to what the kids want to eat or what the parents want the kids to eat (though I know a lot of parents who do like fairy bread!).
